Every pattern here is designed so that someone who has never touched leather can make something they'll be proud of.
What Makes a Pattern
Good for Beginners?
Vasile has been making leather goods by hand since 1988, and has trained dozens of apprentices over the decades. Starting with 2009 we worked with his son, Pavel. According to them, a good beginner pattern has four qualities: clear piece shapes, a construction sequence that makes sense, and a video you can pause and rewind.
Every pattern on this page meets those criteria. They are not simplified or dumbed down — they are the real thing, made achievable with careful documentation. Customers have used them to make their first wallets, their first bags, and their first gifts for people they love.

FAQ
Beginner Questions,
Honest Answers
No. The beginner patterns in this collection are designed so that someone who has never cut or stitched leather before can complete the project. The video tutorial guides you through every step. Vasile has been teaching apprentices — including complete beginners — since 1988.
Vegetable-tanned leather (veg tan) is the best starting point. It's firm, easy to cut cleanly, and holds its shape. Aim for 2–3 mm thickness for bags and 1–1.5 mm for wallets. Chrome-tanned leather is softer and more forgiving for stitching but less structured. Avoid split leather or bonded leather — they don't hold stitching well.
Yes. Every Vasile & Pavel pattern includes a DXF vector file compatible with laser cutters, Cricut machines, and other digital cutting systems. This can significantly reduce cutting time and improve precision on straight edges.
A wallet typically takes 3–5 hours for a first-time maker. A small crossbody bag takes 6–10 hours. A backpack takes 12–20 hours depending on pace and experience. These times include cutting, skiving edges, hole punching, stitching, and finishing.
Yes. Vasile & Pavel explicitly permits commercial use. You may sell any finished leather goods made from a pattern you purchased. Reselling or redistributing the pattern files themselves is not permitted.
