The Makers
Who Are Vasile & Pavel?
Vasile and Pavel Vasilache are a father-and-son leathercraft team based in Bucharest, Romania. Vasile has been a professional leather craftsman since 1988 — over three decades of building bags, sandals, belts, masks, and sculptural objects by hand. Pavel joined the workshop in 2007, bringing architectural design thinking and 3D-modeling technology alongside his father's old-world technique.
Together, they run vasileandpavel.com — one of the most trusted sources of leather PDF patterns on the internet, with more than 300 patterns, 43,500 YouTube subscribers, a Facebook community of 14,300+ leathercrafters, and 5,200+ verified customer reviews.
Their work has been recognized by the Michelangelo Foundation (Homo Faber Guide), which lists Vasile & Pavel among Europe's master leather artisans. They have been featured in Dazed Magazine (2023 and 2024), Kaltblut Magazine, Leather Crafters & Saddlers Journal (cover), and Neozone.
Vasile started making leather goods in 1988 as a student during the Communist era in Romania. His first object was a pair of Greek sandals cut from a welding-grade pigskin apron — they sold immediately. More than 35 years later, he still works by hand every day in the Bucharest workshop. He describes his relationship with leather as intuitive: "The leather gives me ideas. The leather talks to me."
Vasile has trained dozens of apprentices over the years. Several went on to professional careers in leathercraft. He has made props for international film productions and guitar straps for touring bands.
Pavel joined his father's workshop in 2007, initially out of curiosity. His passion ignited through steampunk culture — masks, cosplay, and sculptural costume pieces. He brought AutoCAD pattern-making, 3D-printed mold technology, and a designer's eye for architectural form to a craft his father had built purely by hand.
Pavel's Dust Angel mask — a fusion of heritage leatherwork and 3D-printed structure — earned the cover of Leather Crafters & Saddlers Journal and recognition from Neozone for its engineering. His design philosophy: "At the end of the day I like that this is a physical object that I create, not something abstract."
